The AAWIC Educational Series is presented monthly, featuring established professionals in the entertainment industry discussing various career insights. Presented by Ufront Media and hosted by Roger Maloney, CEO of UFront Media, the audience is provided with the opportunity to learn from and direct their questions to industry leaders regarding their chosen profession.
The AAWIC Education Series will take place on the last Friday of each month—from 7:00-8:00pm EST—via live stream.
The series is free and open to the public. Space will be limited—on a first come, first served.

Costume Design 101

So, you want to be a costume designer? In this installment of the AAWIC Educational Series, you will learn important steps to take in order to pursue a career in costume design.

Host: Roger Maloney, CEO & Founder of Ufront Media

A long-time media professional, Roger has worked with and for companies like HBO, Katz Media, MTV, BET, Grey Advertising, Emmis Broadcasting, Health Science Center, Billboard Magazine Music Conference, and Social Media Week. 

On ufrontmedia.com, Roger hosts, The Spotlight with Roger Maloney, where he interviews entrepreneurs from industries such as advertising, technology, and social and traditional media. 

As a media literacy expert and career development specialist for NYC Board of Education, Roger creates media-related conferences for all levels of education. He also connects executives from technology and media with students at various grade levels through the Building Partnerships for NYC Schools program.

Guest Speaker: Lisa Smedley

Lisa Smedley is a cultural icon, stylist and designer who began her career in the 80’s, creating pop culture as a stylist for album concept covers, videos and commercials for Pop Music talents such as Whitney Houston, Bobby Brown, D’Angelo and many others.

In the new millenium, Lisa turned her focus to television and film, establishing herself as a lead costume designer, main buyer and stylist. One of her recent projects, the 2021 release of the suspense thriller, Karen, starring Taryn Manning (Orange is the New Black), has created a buzz worldwide! Some of Lisa’s other projects include Oscar-nominated Judas and the Black Messiah; the historic story of Soul Train, American Soul; multi-award nominated Gotti, starring Diane Keaton, John Travolta and Kelly Preston; the TV series, Greenleaf, nominated for NAACP awards; and the upcoming TV release of BMF (Black Mafia Family)…just to name a few.

Lisa is known for cultivating styles unique to each client’s personality, while adding a hint of her own quirks. Her acute attention to detail marks her signature touch.

It is the goal of AAWIC to give artistic women a path to fulfilling their dreams through showcasing their talents, exposure to peers’ interaction, and mentoring by established professionals.
